Redcar Coatham Bowl



With growing speculation (and not a little excitement) about the prospect of a new arena on the Redcar site where the Bowl once stood, the story of the venue needed to be told. The Bowl’s importance in the history of Redcar’s musical venues? While the legendary Jazz Club in the Coatham Hotel ran for approximate fifteen years – the Bowl’s doors were open for forty years – from 1974-2014. Not just a venue for every kind of music imaginable, from punk to heavy metal to classical, squeezing some folk and jazz in between, but also for darts, wrestling, snooker competitions, dancing demonstrations and even a disco on ice plus many private functions.

This large format 200 page book, contains a 35,000 word history, a timeline of known events and is crammed with 190 photos, 350 items of memorabilia and quotes from musicians who played the bowl and the customers who bought tickets to see them.
